PROGRAM
ROCCA CALASCIO

1° day

Arrival at the hotel, “Il rifugio della Rocca” early in the afternoon and rooms assignment.

Free stroll to Rocca Calascio, a small village located in the city of L’Aquila, between Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel Del Monte. Behind you there is the beautiful landscape given by the plateau Campo imperatore and in front of you the wonderful view of Majella and Sirente mountains.

At an elevation of 1,460 metres (4,790 ft), Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Rocca Calascio was the location for several successful international movies, such as. Ladyhawke. As well as sequences for The Name of the Rose and The American.

Dinner at the hotel and overnight.

SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO

2° day

Located In the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a small village among pastures and open fields, modelled, during many years, by the hard and industrious work operated by shepherds and farmers who used to live in the area. The village was built in white limestone and has kept perfectly during the years; walking through its small roads you will feel as in the Medieval era.  An easy and panoramic path leads to Rocca Calascio, an old castle located at an elevation of 1460 metres, actually one of the highest castles in Italy.

At the end of the excursion we get to Fonte Vetica (Campo imperatore plane), a small town where, at “Ristoro Mucciante”, you will taste the typical dishes and products of the National Park.

In the afternoon return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

ANELLO DI CAMPO PERICOLI

3° day

Breakfast and start of the excursion: ANELLO DI CAMPO PERICOLI  (packed lunch provided by the hotel)

This ring allows a perfect view on the amazing panorama at depth height given by Campo Pericoli. The excursion, panoramic and profitable, is also suitable for those who do not like big climbing and just want to see campo imperatore and spend some time near its peaks. The itinerary allows you to wander through the campo pericoli amphitheater and to visit Garibaldi’s refuge (2231 mts), the oldest one in Gran Sasso, built in 1886. Then, through a small  rise we get to the portella pass and from there through a panoramic path we get to the Duca degli Abruzzi refuge.

In the afternoon head back home.

Easy September Trekking shoes or similiar (No trainers) flask, heavy/rain clothes , gloves, cap, sunglasses, barrier cream, some foodwater, change t-shirts, gloves, jumper, Trail Mountaineering Poles, sunglasses, windbreaker and everything you may need.
